Luxury Vinyl Tiles vs. Hardwood: Which Is Better?

The Great Flooring Debate: LVT vs. Hardwood

If you've ever walked into a beautifully designed space and admired the floors, chances are you were either looking at genuine hardwood or an exceptionally convincing Luxury Vinyl Tile. In today's market, the gap between the two has narrowed dramatically — and for many clients, LVT is now the smarter choice. But that doesn't mean hardwood is obsolete. Let's break down the real differences.

The Case for Hardwood

Engineered and solid hardwood floors offer something that no synthetic product has fully replicated: the unmistakable warmth and organic variation of real wood. Each plank is unique. The grain patterns, knots, and colour shifts tell the story of a living tree. In high-end residential interiors — particularly in master bedrooms, formal living rooms, and luxury hotel lobbies — hardwood commands a presence that elevates the entire space.

Hardwood floors can also be sanded and refinished multiple times, effectively resetting their appearance and extending their lifespan to 50–80 years with proper care. This makes them a genuine long-term investment rather than a cost.

"Hardwood is the benchmark. Everything else is measured against it."

The Case for Luxury Vinyl Tiles

LVT has undergone a remarkable evolution over the past decade. Today's premium LVT products — like those supplied by Decko Floor — feature embossed-in-register (EIR) textures that mirror real wood grain with astonishing accuracy. They are 100% waterproof, making them ideal for kitchens, bathrooms, and basement spaces where hardwood simply cannot be used.

From a cost perspective, LVT is typically 40–60% less expensive than engineered hardwood for comparable quality, and installation is faster and cleaner — no sanding, no staining, and no off-gassing from adhesives. For commercial spaces with heavy footfall, LVT's wear layer (measured in mils) provides a far more pragmatic solution than wood, which can dent and scratch in high-traffic corridors.

The Verdict: It Depends on Your Space

Our honest recommendation at Decko Floor is this: use hardwood where it can be shown off and protected, and use LVT where performance and practicality matter most. There is no universal winner — only the right material for the right context.

  • Choose Hardwood if: You want maximum prestige, a timeless natural aesthetic, or a property that you intend to sell at a premium
  • Choose LVT if: You have children or pets, moisture-prone areas, a commercial space, or a project with a performance-first brief
  • Consider Laminate if: Budget is the primary constraint and you still want a wood-look result with reasonable durability

What About Engineered Wood?

Engineered wooden flooring — our most popular product category — sits elegantly in the middle. It features a genuine hardwood veneer bonded to a high-density plywood core, giving it the authentic look and feel of solid wood with significantly improved dimensional stability. It can be used in humidity-prone environments where solid wood would warp and is available in a far wider range of widths and lengths than solid hardwood. For most residential applications in India's climate, engineered wood is our first recommendation.
